We’re finally getting some details about Rian Johnson’s third Knives Out film. Last week, Johnson took to social media to share that the movie was about to go into production and boasts the title Wake Up Dead Man, which also happens to be the name of a song by U2.
Since then, casting news is starting to trickle out. Over the weekend, we found out that Josh O’Connor (Challengers) and Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) had joined the call sheet, and Variety just broke the news that Andrew Scott will be part of the cast as well.
Scott is arguably best known for playing Hot Priest in the second season of Fleabag. His other credits include acting against Benoit Blanc himself, Daniel Craig, in the 2015 James Bond film Spectre, as well as playing the titular character in the recent television series, Ripley (pictured above).
We don’t know much about the upcoming film, though Johnson teased on X that the type of mystery it is will be different from the movies that came before. “I love everything about whodunnits, but one of the things I love most is how malleable the genre is,” he wrote. “There’s a whole tonal spectrum from Carr to Christie, and getting to explore that range is one of the most exciting things about making Benoit Blanc movies.”
The first Knives Out film came out in 2019 and was distributed by Lionsgate. The movie garnered almost $313 million worldwide against a $40 million budget, making it a surefire hit. The second movie, Glass Onion, was backed by Netflix. It had a limited theatrical run taking in $13.2 million, but was mostly accessible to audiences by watching it on the streamer. Netflix will also be behind Wake Up Dead Man, and like the two films before it, will likely have a large, star-studded cast of potential murder suspects.
No news on when we’ll be able to see the third Knives Out film, though with production starting soon, it will likely be out sometime in the back half of next year.
